Isipatana retain Jabbar Shield

Isipatana College retained the Abdul Jabbar Shield for another year
when they defeated their traditional rivals Thurstan College by 30
points to 17 in the 40th annual inter-school rugby encounter worked off
at the Royal College Spots Complex in Ried Avenue yesterday.
Isipatana collected their points from one goal, four tries and one
drop goal after having trailed 14-10 at half time. Thurstan College
responded with one goal and two tries.
Uresh Fonseka scored two tries while Ashan Gallage, Rukshith Kuddus
and Tarindu Siriwardena scored a try each for Isipatana.
In addition P. Devinda put over the drop goal and M. Junaid fired
across a penalty.
Rajakaruna and Gamini excel
Sri Lanka's wheel chair tennis players, Upali Rajakaruna and D. M.
Gamini did well in the opening of the 'INVACARE' World Cup, Wheel-Chair
Tennis Tournament now in progress in London. They acquitted themselves
creditably well in the preliminary round matches, by winning their
respective singles and doubles matches against Switzerland. Both have so
impressed to secure a place within the first sixteen in the next round
where they will be up against Brazil.

Kinross Swimming Gala 2009
The sixty eight year old Kinross swimming and life saving club, which
has stood committed in the cause of promoting all forms of water sports
in the country - will, this Saturday and sunday hold its 2009 Kinross
swimming gala.
The opening day on Saturday August 01, will commencing at 9.30 a.m.
be confined to races in the sea, with a quarter mile race for novices,
half mile race for intermediates and a one mile race for champions.
There will also on the same day at 10.30 a.m., be a life saving
competition. On the following day Sunday August 02 commencing at 9.30
a.m. competition in swimming will take place in the swimming pool. Boys
and girls under the age of 8 and 10 years, will be tested in swimming
two breadths of the swimming pool, with the assistance of a board. There
will be a wide range of competitive events for boys and girls within the
age category of under 8, u 10, u 12, u 14 and u 16.
The Kinross swimming gala will end with a series of open events for
men and women. (RD)
Blue and Gold volleyball
The 'Blue Gold and Blue' volleyball tournament, conducted by the
Volleyball Society of the Royal College, Colombo for the Schools in the
Western Province will be held on August 8 and 9 at Royal College
grounds.
The tournament is open for boys under 15 and 17 years and the under
19 tournament is open for both girls and boys. The first round matches
will be played at Royal College courts, while the final matches will be
played at the College indoor stadium.
Favourites enter quarter -finals
All eight favourites vying for the National Billiard Title made their
way to the quarter-finals yesterday at the Billiard Headquarters tables.
The defending champion K.H. Sirisoma received a walk over from P.A.
Sansoni.
The quarter-finals are scheduled to be played today from 11.00 a.m.
onwards at the same venue.

Six-a-side tourney at Embilipitiya
A six-a-side cricket tournament organized by the Embilipitiya Staff
Officers Sports and Welfare Association (SOSWA) will be held at the
Mahaweli Grounds, Embilipitiya for the 18th consecutive year on August
5, said SOSWA President Dr. Asanka Lakmal Ranasinghe.

The rowing tournament co-sponsored by
Bolgoda Lake Rowing Club and Tharunyata Hetak, the first ever
Asian School Rowing Competition to be held in Sri Lanka was
successfully concluded recently and the First Lady Shiranthi
Rajapaksa is seen presenting the all Boys Senior Championship
