New development projects in Uva

Rehabilitation of selected rural roads in Badulla and Moneragala
districts are nearing completion while a program to raise the livelihood
of poverty stricken people in the districts is also in full operation,
Local Government and Provincial Council Minister Janaka Bandara
Tennakoon said.

This project is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). A sum of
Rs. 65 million has been set apart for road development alone in the two
districts.
According to Minister Tennakoon the ADB has granted another Rs.214
million for rural development covering a 200 Km area in Ratnapura,
Moneragala and Badulla districts.
The rehabilitation of selected difficult roads in 12 Pradeshiya Sabha
in these three districts covering 180 Kms is also nearing completion.
Tennakoon commenting on these progress said certain backward areas were
selected under this project.
Intervention of the Government is necessary to ensure a sustained
development in these underdeveloped areas. These programs will help
enhance the income of 2,500 selected families. Nealy 2,000 talented
youths too will be able to find permanent livelihoods. Under this
project, services of the village community are obtained in the road
development activities and half of the earnings are deposited in their
names in the savings account.
These savings accumulated at the end of the project will turn out to
be a great boon for them for possible investment in other business
ventures of their choice. |
