Thondaman meets Tamil Nadu CM
Youth Empowerment and Socio Economic Development Minister
Arumugam Thondaman met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and MP Kanimozhi
at the Chief Minister's Residence in Chennai. Ceylon Workers Congress Vice
President M. Manimuthu was also present during the meeting. Minister Thondaman
requested the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to take action to ensure the release of
107 Sri Lankan fishermen and 21 Sri Lankan fishing boats taken into custody by
the Indian Naval Authorities.
Several issues including the delegation visiting Sri Lanka from
Tamil Nadu and the details of the monetary aid given by India to Sri Lanka were
also discussed. The two leaders also discussed about the welfare of the Sri
Lankan-based Indian origin Tamils and the arrests of Indian fishermen by the Sri
Lankan naval authorities.
The Rajakeeya Ranaviru Pranama ceremony organised by the
Royal College Union to honour old Royalists who had made the
supreme sacrifice for the motherland and presently in
service in the Security and Civil Defence Forces and Police
was held at the Royal College premises yesterday. Here

Illicit Jak tree fellers rise

Nearly 481 Jak trees have been illegally felled in the Matale
district in recent times under various ruses, it was revealed at the District
agricultural meeting recently.
The Yatawatta region alone had lost 151 Jak trees due to the
activities of illicit timber racketeers, the Divisional Secretary of Yatawatta
pointed out at this meeting.
Filling stations robbed:
Over Rs. 130,000 stolen

Two unidentified gunmen had forcibly entered a filling station
at Melsiripura town and robbed Rs. 120,000 threatening the workers with a
firearm.
Meanwhile, another filling station in Rideegama town was robbed
by a two member gang who stole Rs. 14,000.
Both robberies had been taken place around 8.30 and 10.30 p.m.
on June 26.
No arrests have been made. Gokarella and Rambodagalla Police are
investigating.
PC shot himself

A Police Constable attached to the Special Task Force - Kalutara
shot himself Tuesday evening.
He was identified as PC Jayasena (83514), a resident of
Bandarawela.
The body is kept at the mortuary of Nagoda, Kalutara General
Hospital.
Kalutara South Police are conducting investigations.
UGC to release cut off marks today

The University Grants Commission (UGC) is most likely to release
cut off marks for university admission today, UGC Chairman Professor Gamini
Samaranayake told the Daily News.
Cut-off marks indicate the number of students entering the
university for the year. The number of university admissions is likely to
increase when compared to last year.
Teachers against Fund

Ceylon Teachers' Union (Uva Province) Secretary Priyantha
Warushawithana, in a letter addressed to the Secretary to Provincial Education
Ministry has objected to the proposed deduction of money from teachers' salaries
to set up a Governor's Fund.
Earlier, the Zonal Directors of Education in the Province had
sent out a circular to schools to get the consent of teachers to deduct this sum
of money from their salaries. The teachers had reportedly expressed their
unwillingness on this proposal in the absence of clear objectives and management
strategies regarding the fund.
The letter sent by the Teachers' Union alleges that deductions
of this nature are illegal.
Swedish Rotarian felicitated
Lars Berg, a member of the Rotary Club of Sweden was felicitated
at a special event held recently by the newly introduced President Elect for
2009/2010 Rtn. PHF. Leisha Chandrasena Silva and the Rotary Club of Colombo for
the enormous contribution made towards the development of the children in Sri
Lankan prisons.
Lars Berg first visited Sri Lanka in April in 2004.
Anuradhapura Sri Dalada Perahera

The Anuradhapura annual Sri Dalada Perahera (The procession of
the Tooth Relic of the Buddha) will be held for the 13th consecutive year on
July 5 and 6.
Sports meet postponed
The Southern Province Sports Meet due to be held on July 3 and 4
has been postponed due to bad weather. It will be held on July 10 and 11 at the
Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium Beliatte.
Victim remanded in abuse case
A 16-year-old girl, an alleged victim in a sexual abuse case,
was remanded by Kurunegala Provincial High Court Judge Manilal Waidyatillake
till July 15 for giving false evidence before Court.
The Judge freed the accused of all charges and acquitted him and
put off further inquiring for July 15 directing the plaintiffs and witnesses to
appear in court on that day.
Anicut across Yan Oya
Construction work on a massive anicut across Yan Oya at
Wahagahapu wewa, Ellapathana in Horowpothana was inaugurated recently under the
patronage of Nation Building Minister S.M. Chandrasena. Minister Chandrasena who
is also the Chief SLFP Organizer for Horowpothana said President Mahinda
Rajapaksa has granted Cabinet approval for Rs. 300 million for the project.
Robbers as meter readers

Kandy Police Headquarters report that there had been three
burglaries in Teldeniya and Rangala Police areas.
OIC Teldeniya said robbers had posed as meter readers and
entered the houses.The officer said cellular phones, cash and jewellery, sare
said to have been robbed, according to complaints of the villagers.
ASP Ravi Chandrasinghe said police investigations of Rangala and
Teldeniya are continuing.
