Let child get creative

Creative writing not only helps improve your child's creativity, it also helps improve their vocabulary and writing skills. When I was a child, my mother had me writing stories all the time. I still have all my old stories bound together now and I love to look back at what I wrote when I was young.

Imagination is the door to creativity Picture Internet

* This is my personal favourite creative writing exercise, I learned it in fourth grade and I still use it today. If your child has writer's block, I have a suggestion to get those creative thoughts flowing. First you need to find a picture of a person or an animal.

Magazines are the best way to go to find pictures for this exercise. Next, prompt your child to write you a story about the picture that you have given them.

Tell them to be sure to cover whom, what, when, where, how, and why. Their story will write itself and your child will be impressed with what they can come up with on their own.

* Have the child pretend to be an animal such as a bird, horse, or dolphin. Have them write from the animal's point of view. What are they thinking, what do they see?

* You can improve your child's vocabulary and encourage them to write at the same time. The materials that you need to supply for child in this activity in addition to pen and paper are their vocabulary list for school or a list of ten words that you have chosen out of the dictionary and their definitions. Have the child write a story that contains all of the words that you have given them in their correct context.

* Have the child write its own fairy tale. They can incorporate as little or as much of pre-existing fairy tales as they want, but have them create a completely different ending. Maybe it doesn't even have to end "Happily ever after".

* One of my favourite writing exercises that I have ever participated in are, when you have multiple people writing a story. Whether you are the other party helping to write the story or there is another child helping write the story.

Write two sentences of a story then pass it along to have them write two sentences then switch. Repeat it until someone finally ends it.
