Girls
only?
The crowd was thinning due to bad weather when V3 stepped out of the
elevator at MC. Still chatting animatedly over the movie, the trio were
just approaching the exit when Sachi’s eyes strayed to a nearby
boutique.
The other two were quick to note the gleam in his eyes and it did not
take long to figure out what had captured the mischievous lad’s
attention.
“Ah-ha! So that’s why you strayed away from what you were saying ..
Oh, I see...,” Shaz chuckled as she gave Ruwi a nudge.
“You must admit that you can’t help looking there... it’s not just
for girls but guys as well. Any full-blooded guy can’t help glancing
that way,” Sachi defended himself. After the giggles had died away, Ruwi
brought up an interesting point:” How come all these laces and frills
are only for women? Don’t guys have a wide choice to look good as well?”
“True. Look at the selections of clothing for women. You get dresses,
mini skirts, long skirts, pinafores, blouses, shirts, jeans, pants,
saris, cholis, scarves, shawls, corsets, lingeries, cosmetic jewelry and
different types of accessories. Most leading clothes’ stores are devoted
for women’s wear while men’s clothing merely takes one level,” Shaz
piped up.
“Sometimes it’s very hard to shop for a gift for a guy because their
collection is limited according can be quite expensive. Limited options
like shirts, ties, wristwatches or cufflinks are available,” Ruwi pouted
as she saw the rain and produced an umbrella.
“We males are a simple lot. Our items last longer then your lace,
frills and ribbons despite being expensive. Men go for quality rather
than trend,” Sachi said as he walked with his friends. In any case, it
was no use opening his umbrella as it was only drizzling!
Shaz hastens to add: “Still I think it’s unfair. Naturally, a woman
wants her man to look good and if he tries out something different which
brings out the best in him, I don’t see why anyone should complain”.
Adding with a wink, she said: “I saw some guys dressed in flowery shirts
and most looked good in them. Men hardly wear pink even though the
colour looks good on some because they get funny looks from the
conventional crowd.”
Flagging down a bus that was heading for Fort, V3 scramble in and sit
at the last seat to continue their pow-wow. Ruwi records the points in
her head for the next column while Shaz produces the salt and butter
‘Magic Corn’ she had grabbed on their way out.
“I guess it starts off with the baby stage of ‘pink for girls’ and
‘blue for boys’. If women can carry off blues and jeans, why can’t men
go for modified versions of women’s clothes in pinks, reds and oranges?”
pondered Ruwi who heads for ‘true blue’ at a store... Well, almost
anything!
“Both men and women wore platforms and bell bottoms in the past.
Remember, it was the craze back then and nobody had a problem,” Shaz
reflected.
A short silence follows while V3 polished off their snack. Sachi
chucked the last bit into his mouth and wondered aloud: “Why don’t they
have a better word for men’s underwear?”
Shaz said: “The question is why don’t men have better looking
underwear like women? Women’s garments are lovingly-designed and sexy.
Why don’t women get many options on men’s underwear just like men who
like seeing gorgeous nighties and lacy lingerie? After all, women too
like to see men wear tight clothes which highlight their physical
appearance.”
“Women have been bold enough to tread the man’s world but how come we
do not see it happening vice versa? When a man tries to do something
which is traditionally labeled ‘feminine’ it’s like ‘is he....?’ It’s
very hard to change the attitudes of the public,” went on Ruwi.
“Let’s hope your ideas inspire designers to broach the subject. To
really get dressed up means coat and tie for me. I wouldn’t mind trying
on one if one of you girls invent a designer suit for me,” Sachi added
with a wink as the walls of Lake House emerged like giants in the
evening horizon.
