New Chief Justice takes oaths
Justice J. Asoka N. de Silva took his oaths as the new Chief Justice
before President Mahinda Rajapaksa at President's, House yesterday.
Justice Asoka de Silva, the senior most Supreme Court Judge who
becomes the 32nd Chief Justice of Sri Lanka has held various high posts
in the legal sector for nearly 37 years.

The
ceremonial sitting to welcome the new Chief Justice will be held
on Thursday, June 11, 2009 at the Supreme Court at 10.30 a.m.

A past pupil of St. Anthony's College, Katugastota he has graduated
in law from the University of Colombo and the Sri Lanka Law College.
He has also followed post graduate studies at the London University,
Rome Institute of Law on development and in the US. In 1974, he joined
the Attorney General's Department and was appointed Senior State Counsel
in 1981.
He was appointed Deputy Solicitor General in 1988 and functioned as
Senior Deputy Solicitor General in 1995.
Justice Asoka de Silva who functioned as President of the Court of
Appeal in 2001 was appointed a Supreme Court Judge the same year and
continued in this capacity until his appointment as Chief Justice.
Presidential Senior Advisor Basil Rajapaksa, MP, Secretary to the
President Lalith Weeratunge and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa
were also present at the swearing-in ceremony. |
