The Arts Society of the Science Faculty, University of Colombo held a
photographic exhibition recently and it was called ‘Prathibha 2009’.
With an aim of bringing out the artistic talents of their students, the
message of Art is prevalent with the first photographic exhibition held
at the university recently.
Speaking to the Daily News was Ravindu, the President of the Arts
Society who said, “We wanted to show people that the Science faculty
were not studious bookworms but they have talents too”. The photography
was based on two categories which was ‘Nature and Wildlife’ and ‘Human
poses and landscape’.
The theme revolved around various nature photographs like ‘Asian
Grounding’ and the ‘Marsh Dancer’ among others which caught the
wonderful and exotic poses of animals with their surroundings.
There were various serene human theme portraying solitude and even
daring emotions. Encompassing some of the more human gestures were
exhibits like ‘Stand and Deliver’, ‘Am I Selfish?’ and ‘Temptation’.
Also, calm poses where a Buddhist monk is sweeping his footsteps in
the sand was quite a magnificent photographic masterpiece. There were
subtle combinations of works like ‘Difference of opinion’, ‘Living in
Harmony’, ‘Glimpses of the Past’ and ‘Masks in motion’. Human emotions
and feelings were brilliantly captured in creative pictures like
‘Forgive me Master’ and ‘The wound’.
“We invited the public to send their pictures since it was our first
exhibition which also helped our students understand how they can better
their talents in photography” he said.
It was also good to note that many amateur photographers were given
the opportunity to display their work alongside the better known
personalities in photography.
In a bid to help the science students become creatively aware of
their talents, special training was given in the photography aspects
which is now a hobby turned profession.
“Our aim is to give the confidence and push for science students to
tap their hidden talents to indulge in creative aspects and this is why
we organized this exhibition” concluded Ravindu. |
