Celebrating women across the globe

Philippe Salaün

One of his photographs included in Femmes du monde

A photographic exhibition Femmes du monde by Philippe Salaün will be held at Alliance Française de Colombo from June 11 to 28.

Salaün is from Brittany in France. He is a close friend of Robert Doisneau and has started off as his photo printer.

For his first trip to Sri Lanka he brings with him two major exhibitions, starting with Femmes du monde.

“I simply gathered images that I took during my travels and when visiting my home town in Brittany. In the exhibition, there are a dozen of nationalities represented and I have no other intention but to celebrate the force and the diversity of women through my photos captured by chance over the past 30 years.

I shall leave it up to the public to give a meaning to each of them or to the entire collection,” he noted on his debut exhibition in the island.

A photo exhibition of master photographer of the 20th century: Robert Doisneau (1934-1994), 25 tirages originaux will also be presented by Salaün at the Alliance Française on July 2.

Photography workshop

The Alliance Française de Colombo will also hold a photography workshop conducted by Salaün in June. It will take place on June 19, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on June 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

On June 19 participants meet to select pictures taken during the workshop in order to set up an exhibition that will take place later at the Auditorium of the Alliance Française. Participants are required to bring a quality camera as none will be provided. No more than 12 of those interested will be included in the workshop. If there is high demand another workshop will be organized later in June.

Salaün will conduct a conference on June 9 at the same venue relating to his experience as a photographer and as a printer. This is open to the general public.

Please contact the Alliance for more details. Closing date for applications for the workshop is June 5.
