Separated garbage help rag pickers
Dr. Ajantha Perera, of the Natural Program on Recycling Solid Waste
requested residents to separate garbage into paper, glass, plastic,
coconut shells, tins, plastic bottles and milk packs before handing it
over to the garbage collection truck.
This would also give a helping hand to rag pickers who come to
garbage dumps to easily collect them for sale to the solid waste project
to earn a living.
Dr. Perera in a message said residents can contribute towards a meal
for a poor rag picker family and also assist the solid waste recycling
project by separating their waste at home before giving it to the
garbage truck.
She said residents should not try to pass the buck by saying it is
the responsibility of the local authority to manage garbage. |
