Colombo, a dengue mosquito paradise
Shirley WIJESINGHE
Over 800 Dengue mosquito breeding locations have been identified
within the Colombo City limit during the two week house to house
inspection program conducted by CMC in their Dengue eradication
campaign.
The Chief Public Health Inspector, CMC Public Health Department, W.G.
Karunathilake told the Daily News yesterday that at least 10 percent of
residential premises and establishments within Colombo City were guilty
of creating mosquito breeding environments.
These establishments belong to both Government and Private sector, he
added. Most of the breeding places were found to be in thick Shrubs and
overgrown vegetation.
He added that warning notices had already been issued to householders
and owners of the establishments who had failed to keep their premises
clean.
There were 300 Dengue cases been reported in the city since January
of this year, he added.
The CMC has launched a house to house campaign commencing May 15 to
identify mosquito breeding places with the assistance of the Department
of Health and voluntary organizations.
Complaints about locations likely to breed mosquitoes will be
received over hotline 2671616 of the CMC Public Health Department.
