Kapugedara guides BU to victory
Sri Lankan cricketer Chamara Kapugedera and skipper Nafis Iqbal
masterminded the successful chasing of Dhaka Sports Club’s (DSC) tricky
challenge with a couple of brilliant batting displays to guide Brothers
Union to lift the lucrative Habib Group Port City Cricket League (PCL)
at MA Aziz Stadium recently.
Nafis once again played a captain’s knock to remain unbeaten on 53
off 43 but Kapugedera played the vital role with scoring 31 ball-60 runs
as Brothers clinched the inaugural PCL title with a comprehensive
six-wicket win over DSC.
A day ago, Ziaur Rahman’s heroic 31 ball-78 runs knock propelled the
sinking DSC past final. But there was no Ziaur Rahman’s onslaught in the
final as DSC, a team owned by the former cricketers and captains, piled
up a moderate 146 for nine in the stipulated 20 overs.
Brothers never felt in trouble while chasing the moderate total as
they overhauled the target with a couple of overs to spare.
Kapugedera struck six boundaries and three over it on the way to
score his 31 ball-60 runs while Nafis Iqbal slammed five boundaries to
score 54 off 44. Nafis Iqbal held off nerve from the one end and gave
Kapugedera strike most of the time as the Lankan batsman was in fine
rhythm. He destroyed DSC bowlers with upbeat mood as no one got a little
mercy from his apart from his Pakistan counterpart Rashed Hanif.
Kapugedera stepped in when Brothers were reeling on struggling 43 for
three in 8.3 overs. The Lankan recruit used his bat like a sledgehammer
to put Brothers Union on the path to a thrilling victory in front of
about 40, 000 spectators.
Earlier Pakistani recruit Wasim Nayeem gave DSC a solid start hitting
34 runs of just 18 balls knock while his compatriot Rashed Hanif
utilised the start with blasting a 48 ball-56 runs knock as the DSC
prepared the stage for Ziaur expecting another storm like the previous
match. The winners received the top prize of !.5 million Bangladeshi
Takkas while the runners-up received 500,000.
Chamara Kapugedera was adjudged man of the match for his brilliant
batting performance to earn a cash Tk. 100,000. |
