‘Govt’s strong resistance of Western pressures a bold step’

C.P.S.L. statement on the defeat of the LTTE:

The UPFA Government’s strong resistance to the unceasing pressures from the Western powers, in the name of international community and under the pretext of genocide, violation of human rights, humanitarian catastrophe etc. was a bold step in the correct direction of frustrating all attempts by the LTTE to internationalise the conflict and seek foreign intervention.

Undeterred by pressures, threats and intimidation, President Rajapaksa steered clear of all hurdles, cleverly and courageously.

The intransigency and belligerence of the LTTE leadership has finally paved the way for its military defeat and destruction within a short period of 2 years and 10 months. The significance of the end of the so-called Eelam IV war has to be evaluated in the context of our experiences in the 3 preceding so-called Eelam wars 1983-1987, 1989-1993 and 1995-2001, states a Communist Party, press release.

The UPFA Government having taken the experiences of five previous Administrations under J. R. Jayewardene, R. Premadasa, D. B. Wijetunga, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Ranil Wickremesinghe (as Executive Prime Minister) into account, both in military operations and peace talks embarked upon an irreversible strategy to counter effectively the strategy of the LTTE.

The defeat of the LTTE militarily was the result of courageous and wise political leadership, inflexible bond of unity and cohesion of the Armed Forces and Police, correct strategy and tactics, reorientation of the Government’s Foreign Policy, ability to resist global propaganda network and people’s support.

It was remarkable that President Mahinda Rajapaksa unlike his predecessors, was so cautious as not to interprete LTTE’s change of tactics as change of its strategy.

The unwavering stand taken by China and Russia, amongst other friendly countries in support of Sri Lanka, the neutralist position of Japan, the understanding shown by the Indian Government despite heavy pressures on it internally and externally - all contributed to the termination of the 25 years’ Eelam war and the 30 years of LTTE terrorism.

The LTTE which claimed to be the sole representative of the Tamil people, distanced itself from the Tamil people so fast as to end up as a mere military outfit representing no one but terrorists. Its chauvinist ideology, facist type organisation, relationship with right-wing forces, its reliance on arms instead of people hastened its inevitable downfall.

All charges of genocide, gross of violation of human rights, humanitarian catastrophe made by the LTTE have been totally exposed as manufactured overnight by the influx of nearly 300,000 people to the Government controlled areas through the safe-zone. In this gigantic exercise of evacuating civilians, the security forces have earned the love and admiration of people, the world over.

The minimum possible casualties in the armed forces and almost insignificant deaths amongst civilians in the whole operation of 2 years and 10 months are the redeeming features of this exemplary operation.

The unearthing of large catches, hidden sophisticated weapons, the LTTEs preparedness for a long drawn-out war, unfathomable support given it to by certain NGOo and INGOo - all reveal sinister moves and machinations of certain foreign forces aimed at wider objectives.

The Communist Party of Sri Lanka salutes all those brave men in the armed forces who gave their lives, for the cause of the Sri Lankan people.

The C.P.S.L. reiterates its consistent position that we must offer what the Tamil Speaking People need not what the LTTE wanted and fought for.
