Jordan to Israel: Accept Palestine State
JORDAN: Jordan’s King Abdullah II has pressed Israeli Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept a two-state solution to help end
Israel’s decades-long conflict with the Palestinians.
Abdulah II welcomed Netanyahu in the city of Aqaba in a Red Sea
resort town bordering Israel, to talk on the peace process in the area
and accept the Arab peace initiative.
The Israeli leader arrived earlier Thursday on an unannounced visit
to Jordan, it was Netanyahu’s second trip abroad since taking office
last month, just three days after he met Egyptian President Hosni
Mubarak in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm Al-Sheikh, to discuss issues
related to resuming the deteriorated relations among Palestine and
Israel.
The king pressed the Israeli government to declare its commitment to
the two-state solution, accept the Arab peace initiative and take
practical steps to achieve progress. The Arab initiative calls for the
countries of that community to recognize Israel and proceed to the
normalization of ties, in exchange for the Israel accepting the creation
of a Palestinian independent state and withdrawing from all Arab lands
occupied in the 1967 war.
“The Middle East is going through a critical stage that requires
swift action to end the conflict,” the king told Netanyahu. Amman,
