Silavathura - Murunkan road:

Work begins

Construction work going on at the relocated site of St. John’s Fish Market at Peliyagoda.

The Government has begun reconstruction of the stretch of road from Silavathura to Murunkan (15 km) which is connected to the Mannar-Pooneryn main road (A32) on President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s directions.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs.484 million and will be funded by the Asian Development Bank.

Consulting Engineers and Contractor (CEC) will handle the construction. Six kms will be reconstructed under the first stage. The Road Development Authority will supervise the construction work, Highways and Road Development Minister T.B. Ekanayake told the Daily News.

The road from Silavathura to Murunkan is connected to the A32 road (Mannar-Jaffna) and the A14 road (Medavachchiya-Mannar and Thalaimannar). This road will enable people to bring their agricultural produce to the South and it would directly help accelerate economic growth in the area.

The Minister said this step would vastly improve the transport service in the entire area resulting in the speedy development of agriculture, fishing and tourism sectors.
