In North and East Provinces:
English for teachers
A program to improve the knowledge of English of English teachers who
serve in the North and East aimed at developing the English knowledge
among the students in the two provinces was launched in Colombo last
Monday.
This program was held under the Mahinda Chinthana concept, which has
declared 2009 as the Year of Information Technology and English
Language. Education Minister Susil Premajayantha presided over the
ceremony.
Under this program, around 30 selected English teachers from these
provinces will undergo special three-week training and they will, in
turn, be deployed to train other English teachers.This teacher-training
program has been co-sponsored by the Presidential Secretariat, Ministry
of Education, American Embassy in Colombo and UNESCO.
The sole objective behind the entire program has been to produce a
generation of students who are equipped with a comprehensive knowledge
along with a high degree of competence in English. Sunimal Fernando of
the Presidential Secretariat Office, Professor Rajiva Wijesinha.
American Embassy official Jeff Anderson and Secretary to UNESCO in Sri
Lanka Preethi Perera were also present at the occasion.
