Fidel Castro: Once again, the rotten OAS
Cuba : Leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro wondered on
Saturday what right the Organization of American States has to judge us
if we were expelled from the institution for proclaiming our convictions
and we are not one of its members.
In an article titled "Once Again, the Rotten OAS," released today by
Cubadebate website, Fidel Castro refers to a report approved by OAS'
Inter American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), "which says that Cuba
"continued violating" basic rights of the population and remained "the
only" country in the region where there is absolutely no freedom of
expression." "Is there really an ICHR within that rotten institution?
Yes, there is, I answer myself. And just what is its mission?
To judge the human rights situation in the OAS member countries. Is
the U.S. a member of that institution? Yes, it is one of the most
honorable members. Has it ever condemned the government of the United
States? No, not ever," the Cuban leader wrote.
He added that to question Cuba's role in this field, the OAS' IACHR
would have to start with the outright recognition that this has been the
nation that has done the most for education, science and culture among
all countries in the world, an example followed today by other
revolutionary, progressive governments.
