Construction Chamber produces 893 NVQ Level III craftsmen
The Chamber of Construction Industry (CCI) in collaboration with the
Bioforce Development Institute of France under a post tsunami livelihood
development program funded by the French Red Cross operated four
construction craftsmen training centres in the districts of Kalutara,
Galle, Matara and Hambatota.
The Bioforce Development Institute of France has been traditionally
responsible for the creation of partnerships with French private and
public entities and provides specialized pedagogical support for
training as a humanitarian activity. During 2008/2009, 324 young persons
were trained in masonry and 569 in carpentry enabling them to obtain NVQ
Level III.
The CCI-Bioforce training program introduced occupational health
and safety into the training curricular in addition to the
trainees being taught English. |
In addition recognition of the Prior Learning Program (RPL) for
experienced craftsmen to facilitate achievement of NVQ level III
qualification was launched resulting in 90 masons and 115 carpenters
reaching the required standards while this program is now being carried
out at Thamaduwa and Kalutara as a continuing operation under the CCI
Bioforce partnership.
Professional development for training of trainers in terms of
three-day workshops and five-day resident seminars have also been
conducted benefiting over 150 trainers.
Training in project management for construction managers and site
supervisors, in addition to 960 craftsmen being provided with
specialized training in water proofing, tiling and low cost house
building technologies are among the program conducted by the CCI
Bioforce Partnership.
The CCI-Bioforce training program introduced occupational health and
safety into the training curricular in addition to the trainees being
taught English. The trainees were provided with safety gear and tools on
becoming full fledged craftsmen at the end of the six-month training
program of which three months were dedicated to site training under a
recognized constructor at a construction worksite in addition to them
being paid a daily stipend ranging from Rs. 100-300.
The partnership envisages not only the sustainability of the present
training centres but has also assisted the Chamber of Construction
industry to develop training capacities which could be gainfully
utilized in any livelihood development program designed for the Northern
and Eastern regions to benefit conflict affected persons and IDPs in
particular.
The Chamber of Construction Industry and Bioforce shared a common
vision of setting a benchmark in the vocational training sector not only
for the quality of training but also for attention to safety matters
which were included in the training provided to the trainees in addition
to the technical training. |
