Mealy bug attacks Rubber nurseries
JVP MP S. K. Subasinghe yesterday told Parliament, a mealy bug (Piti
makuna) pestillence has affected rubber plant nurseries in the
Avissawella area causing a grave threat to the plantation industry.
The MP brought this issue to the attention of the House yesterday
during the debate on the regulations on Soil Conservation and
Agriculture. Subasinghe said the issue had been discussed at the
Consultative Committee of the Plantation Ministry. (UK & IR)
E-NICs next year
The Chief Government Whip and Urban Development and Sacred Area
Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardena told Parliament yesterday the
Government will begin issuing the computerized National Identity Cards
or e-NICs by early next year. The Minister said tenders will be called
by July this year to issue the new identity cards. The cost of the new
identity card would be Rs. 175 per unit, the Minister said in response
to an oral question raised by JVP MP Vijitha Ranaweera. (UK & IR)

Another birth at Pinnawala orphanage
The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage recorded another birth of an
elephant on Tuesday.
This time the baby is a female. A male elephant was born in April
this year.
The baby elephant’s mother is Sandalee, Assistant Director of the
Orphanage Anoma Priyadarshanee said. |
