Rehab of seven major irrigation schemes in NE

Rehabilitation of seven major Irrigation projects at a cost of Rs.
1,800 million launched by re-awakening project under the Nation Building
and Estate Infrastructure Development Ministry with World Bank
assistance is in progress, Project Director P.H. Sugathadasa said.
He said the project has underken rehabilitation of seven major
irrigation projects in Northern and Eastern Provinces.
They are Allai in the Trincomalee district, Rugam in the Batticaloa
district, Karavahu in the Ampara district, Giants Tank in the Mannar
district, Pavatkulam in the Vavuniya district, Valukkaiaru in the Jaffna
district, and Iranamadu in the Kilinochchi district.
Rehabilitation works at Allai, Karavahu and Valukkaiaru are nearing
completion and other projects excluding Iranamadu are also in progress.
These are the main irrigation schemes situated in Northern and
Eastern provinces and these schemes provide irrigation facilities for
thousands of hectares of paddy land in these two provinces. With the
completion of these projects, farmers living in the North and East will
be benefited, he added. |
