Language rights program in Passara

The Future in Our Hands Development Fund together with the Foundation for Co- Existence (FCE) and European Commission organised a Language Rights Program to educate Government officials, Civil Society organisations and media personnel on the importance of implementing language rights as a human right. Assistant Secretary of the Passara Division Chamila Jayasinghe who was the Chief Guest said the Passara Divisional Secretary Division has been gazetted as a bilingual DS Division by the President.

He said due to lack of proper translation facilities in my office, we are not in a position to reply letters sent to us in Tamil. We lack fluency in the Tamil language and are compelled to reply in Sinhala. I know that it should not be done, but, we have no alternative. But, in the future, I will be able to fulfil the aspirations of the Tamil community in Passara with the guidance of the Divisional Secretary.
