Ruhuna medics for Settikulum

The Medical Faculty of the Ruhuna University yesterday sent a high profile medical team including two paediatricians to provide health care facilities to the civilians who have been temporary accommodated in the welfare camps in Settikulam in Vavuniya.

Prof Sujeewa Amarasena of the Ruhuna University's Paediatrics Department organised this week long mission to Settikulam following a telephone conversation with Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa

Over 22 doctors have come forward voluntarily to help these civilians on brief notice given by Prof Amarasena. Captain Saman De Silva is coordinating the program.

The doctors during their stay at the camps are expected to treat more than 200 patients a day. The medicine and transport facilities for the doctors were provided by Galle District SLFP Organiser Sajjin Vass Gunawardena. Prof. Sujeewa Amarasena told the Daily News that the people from the south have always stood up to support their fellows in the North when they are in trouble. "This mission will enhance cooperation between the communities" he said.
