No tax exemptions for items produced locally
CHAMINDA PERERA
The Government will not grant tax exemptions for some items which are
sent in the form of donations by Sri Lankans and philanthropists living
abroad, as they are locally available in abundance.
According to Finance Ministry Additional Director M. P. Jayatissa,
exemption of tax on items that are produced locally would have adverse
impact on local products and the industry.
"Sri Lankans and philanthropists living abroad are requested not to
send items such as rice, biscuits, water bottles, soap, tea and
toothpaste as donations for the civilians who have fled from the
clutches of terrorists. He said the Ministry has received a number of
requests seeking tax concession for items promised by the
philanthropists abroad for the welfare of IDPs.
The requirement of the civilians living in welfare villages and camps
can be obtained from the Nation Building and the Estate Infrastructure
Development Ministries and they are requested to contact Director Monty
Ranatunga on 2382065.
