Ministry will not issue letters for admissions
The Education Ministry in a press release said it will not issue
letters for admissions from Grade One to Grade 11, 12 and 13 at National
Schools for 2009.
Students seeking admission to other schools on the basis of their
results of the GCE (O/L) examination in December 2008 are requested to
submit their applications to these schools before May 15, 2009.
The Ministry will not issue letters to this effect, the release said.
Special prayers
A prayers and religious lectures program will commence on Sunday
April 26 at the Nawala Jumma Mosque by Moulavi A. B. M. Mubarak and Y.
M. Rafi. It will be held after Magrib Prayers and continue till Isha
prayers.
A lecture will also be conducted by Moulavi M. T. Hilurhdeen after
Isha prayers.
Fined for ganja

Dambulla Magistrate Nimal Ranaweera fined Rs. 2,000 on two young men
who were convicted of having 1800 mg of ganja in their possession.
The accused are residents of Naula.

Ranjurawa road deplorable
Ginigathena special corr.
The Ranjurawa-Medilla road in the Ambagamuwa (Ginigathena) DS
division in the Nuwara Eliya district is in a state of disrepair.
The road which has not been repaired for a long time is full of
pot-holes which turn into muddy puddles on rainy days inconveniencing
motorists and pedestrians.
The affected villagers appeal to the authorities to take measures to
reconstruct the Medilla-Ranjurawa road.
Meals increase school attendance

The Education Ministry program of providing mid-day meals to school-
children has encouraged them to attend school regularly, Divisional
Director of Education M.M. Ismail said at the Al-Hilal Vidyalaya
Sainthamaruthu in Kalmunai Zonal Education area. Children from low
income families, have benefitted from this program, he said.
He urged those who are interested in improving conditions related to
the country's formal education to streamline the program activities with
genuine involvement.
Community centre neglected
Ginigathena special corr.
The community centre at Pallewatta, a remote village situated in the
Ambagamuwa (Ginigathena) DS division in the Nuwara Eliya district is in
a state of disrepair.
Residents of the village of Pallewatta are inconvenienced in
utilizing the dilapidated building to carry out their community
development activities.
The affected villagers mention that if their community centre is
reconstructed, it will greatly benefit them to carry on their community
development activities.
The affected villagers appeal to the authorities concerned to take
action to remedy the situation.

based in India, Moulana S.M.S. Abdul Kareem Thangal Al Aidroosi is
in Sri Lanka.
Muhiyyadeen Mow-lood in memory of Kuthubul Akthab
Ghousul Ahlam Dhasthakeer Muhiyyadeen Abdul Qadir Jeelani and Grand
Nazar kandoori will be held on Sunday, April 26, at 9.30 a.m. at the
Sri Lanka Islamic Centre, Maligawatte, Colombo 10 under the guidance
of Moulana Abdul Kareem Thangal.
Special prayers also be held for peace and harmony
in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation Muslim Service
will have a live broadcast the above mowlood ceremony from 10.30
a.m. to 12 noon.
Seminar
The College of General Practitioners' Sri Lanka,
will hold a seminar on the recent outbreak of Dengue fever in Sri
Lanka which has caused more deaths in the country upto now, than
last year.
The seminar will be held on Sunday, April 26 at 4
p.m. at the Lionel Memorial Auditorium of the SLMA at No. 6 Wijerama
Mawatha, Colombo 7.
Workshop
Charge d'Affaires of the US Embassy James Moore will
join Power and Energy Minister W. D. J. Seneviratne, to launch a
two-day workshop on energy efficient lighting.
The workshop will bring together experts from the
United States, Sri Lanka, and other countries in South Asia and will
be held at the Crystal Upper Floor, Taj Samudra, Colombo on Monday,
April 27 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
STF recovers explosives, food items
A team of STF officers from the Vavuniya camp
ambushed a group of LTTE cadres at Varikuttur on Tuesday night and
recovered a stock of explosives and food items. They also recovered
the body of an unidentified LTTE cadres killed in the confrontation.
The explosives recovered included two claymore mines
weighing 10 kg and 3.5 kg and a 82-2 type live hand grenade, said a
press release issued by the STF yesterday.
Lecture
The General Dental Practitioners' Association will
conduct a lecture discussion on "Law - its relevance to Dental and
Medical Practitioners" on May 6 from 8 p.m. 9 p.m. at the SLDA
Auditorium, OPA Professor Stanley Wijesundera Mawatha, Colombo 7.
