How to qualify for GCE (Advanced Level)

Students who sat for the G.C.E. (Ordinary Level) examination in 2008 and wish to seek admission to G.C.E. (Advanced Level) classes should have the following qualifications.

1. National qualifications for admission.

1.1 For students who have followed the G.C.E. (O/L) old syllabus.

Should have passed in 06 subjects including language and mathematics with at least 03 credit passes among them.

Any passes or credit passes obtained for additional subjects cannot be used in fulfilling the above qualifications.

1.2. For students who have followed the G.C.E. (Ordinary Level) new syllabus.

They should have passed 06 subjects including langauge and mathematics with at least 03 credit passes out of the 09 subjects offered in the G.C.E. (O/L) examination.

2. The above are the basic qualifications for G.C.E (O/L) old syllabus. However, other requirements needed for admission to advanced level classes are the same for both old and new syllabuses.

2.1 Above general qualifications can be fulfilled in two attempts as well.

1. In the event a student submits two G.C.E. (O/L) result sheets pertaining to two years, the first result sheet should contain 05 subjects including language and mathematics with at least 03 credit passes among them, while the other result sheet should meet the balance subject to complete the general qualifications.

2. Where student submits a result sheet containing 05 passes including language and mathematics with at least 03 credit passes among them, such a student may be admitted to the G.C.E. (A/L) class subject to a condition that he\she fulfils the required qualification strictly in the next G.C.E. (O/L) examination. Failure to do so will result in the dismissal of this particular student from the school.

3. In case where students are short of one credit pass out of the 03 credits, (students who have passed 06 subjects with just 02 credit passes) they will be considered as having the required pass only if they have obtained a credit pass or a higher grade in that subject at the school based evaluation program together with an ordinary pass for the same subject obtained at the written test of the G.C.E. (O/L) examination.

4. Those who follow the commerce stream should have obtained a credit pass for mathematics, entrepreneurship studies/business studies.

5. Those who follow the physical science stream (maths) should have obtained a credit pass for mathematics along with passes for science subjects.

6. Those who follow the bio science stream should have obtained a credit pass for science subject and a pass for mathematics.

7. Those following these streams (commerce/physics/bio/ maths) cannot fulfil the 'credit' pass requirement for science subject from school based evaluation programs.
