Dharmaraja OBU to hold sports carnival

Old Boys Union of Dharmaraja College, Kandy will be organising their annual sports carnival for their families on April 25 at the Pallekelle Open Prison Camp grounds commencing at 8 a.m. Six-a-side cricket, seven-a-side soccer, netball tournaments along with races for various age groups including walking races for men and women will be held at this sports carnival.

Chief organiser of this festival, Dr. Vajira Jayasinghe told the Daily News as this is held during the New Year period some avurudhu kreeda will also be held and the main attraction will be selecting the Avurudhu Kumara and Kumari for 2009. The prizes will be distributed by the Principal of Dharmaraja College, S. M. Keerthiratne and the cordinators of this event are:

Annual colours night of Peradeniya University

Over 360 students (boys and girls) of the University of Peradeniya will receive colours and half colours at the annual Colours Night to be held on April 24 at the Peradeniya University gymnasium commencing at 5.30 p.m. under the patronage of Vice Chancellor Prof. H. Abeygunawardena. The Directress of Physical Education of the University of Peradeniya, Arosha Perera is organising this annual event.


Chula retires from the Royal Colombo Golf Club

Chula de Silva retired from the RCGC after having served as its first General Manager/CEO for 5 years. He joined the RCGC in March 2004, which was the 125th Anniversary of the Club and retired on March 31.

He was in the organizing committee of the 125th Anniversary Celebrations where many Royal Golf Clubs from all over the world participated.

This was the biggest celebrations the Club had. During the Tsunami of 2004 many Golf Clubs from abroad donated money to build Houses for those affected by the Tsunami and he was involved in supervising the construction of these 15 Houses that were build in Habaraduwa. The cattle at the club has been a nuisance and a major problem for over 50 years. He was instrumental in obtaining a Court Order through the Colombo Municipal Council to evict the cattle. In the year 2008, the Royal Colombo Golf Club was awarded "The Best Restaurant" in Colombo by the Colombo Municipal Council. He also increased the F & B income by more than double and was involved in building the New Caddies, Staff Rest Rooms, Work Shop and the Generator Rooms during his period as General Manager.

Chula was very friendly with the Press and is to organize Press Conferences, Golf Tournaments and Social Evenings at the RCGC very efficiently.

Chula is an Old Royalist and during his College days was a athlete and a Basket Ball Player. He together with Darell Leversz, Vijaya Malalasekera and Gunasekera Held the 440 yds Public School record in 1962.

This was not broken for many years. He also represented Ceylon in Basketball in 1962 while still in College. He played under the Captaincy of Major General C. Thuriraja and was the youngest player of that Ceylon team. He also played rugger for Uva. He is now a keen Badminton Player.

He joined Planting in 1964 and was a Superintendent. Manager, Agricultural Advisor and a Regional Director of the JEDB. He joined Renuka Hotels as GM in 1995 and was also Director of Cargo Boat Development Co.


Gaudio re-lives the past

The 2004 French Open champion Gaston Gaudio, rehabilitating his tennis after dropping off the rankings map in recent seasons, revealed Tuesday he has asked for a wild card for the French Open. The 30-year-old South American was ecstatic after beating compatriot Diego Junqueira 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the Barcelona Open first round as he played only his third match of the season at ATP level.

"I'd love to play in Roland Garros. I've requested a wild card and am hoping to get it. This win is unbelievable, it's great to win a match at this level again," he said at the venue where he lifted the first of his eight career titles in 2002 over Albert Costa. BARCELONA, Wednesday,
