Curtain comes down on WP polls campaign

All electioneering in the Western Provincial Council polls ended at mid night yesterday and although campaigning through the electronic media will conclude today, Additional Commissioner of Elections W.P. Sumanasiri told the 'Daily News' yesterday.

The total number of registered voters in the Western Province is 3,820,214. (1,560,593 Colombo, 1,458,295 Gampaha and Kalutara 801,326).

The total number of members to be elected from the Province is 102. They are 43, 39,20 for the districts of Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara respectively.

The number of candidates from recognized political parties and independence groups are 2,378. They are 1,380 from the Colombo district, 630 from Gampaha and 368 from Kalutara. Meanwhile, the Exice Department sources said all taverns, liquor outlets and wine stores will be closed on April 25 and 26 due to the elections.
