Govt schools in WP closed on April 24, 25
Government schools in the Western Province will be closed on April 24
and 25 (two days) for election purposes of the Western Provincial
Council Election.
These schools will be reopened on April 27, Monday. Isipatana College
and D.S. Senanayake Vidyalaya in the Colombo District, Paththalagedara
Siyana College of Education, Pathalagedera Vidyaloka Maha Vidyalaya in
the Gampaha District, Pasdunrata College of Education and Musaeus Girls
College in the Kalutara District which are counting centres have already
been closed and will be reopened on April 28, states a press release
from the Education Ministry.
Rains lash Colombo

The City of Colombo experienced a rain fall of 137.4 millimetres from
3.00 a.m. to 9.am yesterday inundating most low lying areas. Ratmalana
recorded a rain fall of 53.4 millimetres.
Office workers and commuters faced transport problems when their bus
routes were changed due to road blocks while the Colombo city traffic
police faced heavy traffic during the peak hours of the morning due to
the bad weather.
Train commuters too were affected. Rail tracks were under water in
Orugodawatta, Kelaniya, Maradana and Fort areas while the signal system
was also affected.
Meteorologist P.G. Yasaratna told the Daily News the heavy rain
experienced yesterday was due to a freak atmospheric disturbance
experienced in the Western coastal areas.
"There would be rain in the evenings in the coastal belt from Matara
to Colombo in the next few days," he said. The intermonsoonal convergent
zone would also cause rain in many parts of the island in the evenings.
Achievements by Security Forces unique - DLF
The Democratic Left Front (DLF) in a press release states that the
strategies adopted by the Security Forces in their task to release over
60,000 civilians from LTTE bondage thus thwarting LTTE efforts to bring
the Government into disrepute have earned plaudits from the whole world.
Attacks launched by the LTTE to prevent the civilian exodus were
well-known to the world. "The success achieved by the Security Forces
can be considered more humanitarian than a battle victory."
"This achievement by Security Forces without subjecting the civilians
to agonizing moments is unique in recent history," the press release
further stated.
Panadura Sri Sumangala College turns 100
Sri Sumangala College, Panadura, one of the leading Buddhist schools
in the island completed 100 years this March. A new building complex
built with the generous assistance of the Japanese government will be
opened today at 4 p.m. by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to commemorate the
Centenary of the College. Among the other distinguished visitors would
be Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka, Japanese Ambassador Kunio
Takahashi, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha, Transport Minister
Dullas Alahapperuma, Nation Building Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena,
Environment and Natural Resources Minister Patalee Champika Ranawaka and
former Western Province Chief Minister Reginald Cooray.
A Commemorative Stamp and a First Day Cover will be issued by Post
and Telecommunications Deputy Minister M. S. Sellasamy.
Several Members of Parliament and High officials are also expected to
attend the ceremony.
Lalith Athulathmudali memorial oration
The 16th death anniversary of Lalith Athulathmudali falls on April
23, 2009. Sequel to a proposal made by Minister of Trade, Marketing
Development, Cooperatives and Consumer Services Bandula Gunawardena, a
memorial oration has been organised jointly by the Mahapola Higher
Education Scholarship Trust Fund and the Lalith Athulathmudali
Foundation and this is to be held today (Thursday) April 23, at the
BMICH Committee Room A commencing at 5.30. pm.
This year's Lalith Athulathmudali Memorial Oration will be delivered
by the Most Ven. Prof. Bellanwila Wimalaratana Anunayake Thera,
Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayawardhanapura and
Viharadhikari of the Bellanwila Raja Maha Viharaya. |
