Kirghizstan to close US base
Kirghizstan: Kirg- hizstan Security Council Secretary Adajan
Madumarov informed on Monday that the Manas Military Base will become a
civilian site following the withdrawal of US troops.
He explained to the media that the Kirghiz government does not intend
to use the airfield for military purposes after the Pentagon transfers
its troops to Afghanistan. In compliance with established particulars,
the country decided to deactivate the naval base with the departure of
foreign troops, noted the official.
Regarding use of Manas to move non-military cargo, Madumarov said
national authorities have not yet received such proposals from other
states, a reference to a possible NATO route, although he said there are
standing conventions with Russia, Kazajstan and Uzbekistan on this
subject.
The Pentagon has until August 18 to withdraw 1,000 troops, as well as
planes and military technology, according to a law drawn up by the
Executive and approved in Parliament in February 2008.
Bishkek has denied alleged talks with Washington to extend the US
stay in that enclave; used since 2001 to supply occupation troops in
Afghanistan with military equipment.
For President Kurmanbek Bakiev, the decision to cease renting the
airport to the United States and 11 NATO countries will make Kirguistan
an active participant in the world peace process.
