Explosions heard in safe zone

Military sources said, that they heard several loud explosions in the safe zone last afternoon, following a final announcement by the Army, made through loudspeakers to the LTTE, to release civilians held hostage by them.

Military spokesman, Brigadier, Udaya Nanayakkara yesterday confirmed that the Security Forces personnel in the area had heard several loud explosions, after the Army’s call to let civilians go. Further details regarding the explosions were not known at the time of going to press.

However, the military suspect that the explosions were triggered by the Tigers, either to frighten civilians or had targeted a group which tried to escape their clutches.
