Death of Karunaratne Wijeweera
Karunaratne Wijeweera, 84, former Tax Advisor to the Ministry of
Finance, Planning and former Senior Commissioner of Inland Revenue
passed away on April 6. He was responsible for the introduction of the
PAYE scheme in 1971 after which an employee could confidently receive a
take home pay without fear of further tax payments.
He was also in the committee that formulated the detailed scheme for
the establishment of the Inland Revenue Service.
In recognition of his varied experience he was invited to serve on
the panel of Tax Experts by the Commonwealth Secretariat in the United
Kingdom, the United Nations in New York and the International Monetary
Fund at Washington, a very rare honour for a Sri Lankan.
Wijeweera was the President of the Netherlands Alumni Association of
Sri Lanka, and also the President of the Kollupitiya Resident’s Welfare
Society. His funeral will take place today at Kanatte at 4.30 p.m.

Death of H. L. De Silva, PC
The death occurred of H.L. De Silva, President’s Counsel. He was a
former President of the Bar Association (1987-1989) and held a Honorary
Life Member (Honoris Causa) of the Association.
The Bar Association kindly requests its members to assemble at the
main entrance of the General Cemetery, Kanatte on Saturday April 11,
2009 at 10.45 a.m. to participate in the funeral procession of the late
H.L. De Silva, PC.
