Price ceiling for sugar, dhal

The Government yesterday declared the maximum retail prices for
essential items like white sugar, all types of dhal and Vatana dhal
through a special Gazette Notification as relief measures to consumers
for the festive season.
Accordingly, the maximum retail price for a kilo of white sugar is
Rs.73 while a kilo of all types of dhal have been stipulated by the
maximum retail price of Rs.175.
Meanwhile,the maximum retail price of a kilo of Vatana dhal will be
Rs.98.50. Trade, Marketing Development, Co-operatives and Consumer
Services Minister Bandula Gunawardhana told the media-briefing in
Colombo yesterday.
The Minister said that the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) through
the special Gazette Notification has declared these maximum retail
prices which were effective from yesterday midnight.. Under this Gazette
Notification, no trader can charge more for these three essential items
on direct ways and indirect ways.
He said that selling these items at higher prices, creating
unnecessary shortages by hiding stocks, not displaying price tags,
selling items imposing unnecessary conditions and refusing to sell them
are punishable offences under the Consumer Affairs Authority, Act No 9
of 2003.
”Any trader found engaging in unfair trading and breaching the State
stipulated maximum retail prices will be brought before the Courts,” he
said.
The CAA would conduct islandwide raids on errant traders who sell
essential food items at higher rates during the festive season.
