The Annual General Meeting of the Table Tennis Association of Sri
Lanka (TTASL) was held recently at Otters Aquatic Club Colombo.
Minister of Urban Development Rohana Dissanayake (MP - Matale
District) was elected uncontested as the President of the TTASL for the
period of 2009/2010.
Minister Rohana, a very keen Table Tennis promoter in the Matale
District accepted and forwarded his candidature for this position after
receiving several requests and encouragements from clubs and
associations that are affiliated to the TTASL.
Minister Rohana received approval from Sports and Recreation Minister
Gamini Lokuge to contest for this position.
Chandana Perera, an Old Boy of St. John's College, Nugegoda and a
Table Tennis Instructor of the Playgrounds and Recreation Department of
Colombo Municipal Council was also elected uncontested as the General
Secretary of the TTASL. Chandana, a former President of the TTASL from
1995 to 1997 and its General Secretary in many years who recently
celebrated 25 years as an administrator of the sport serving in various
capacities and heading various committees. Chandana is also a Level 1
ITTF coach and has been a longstanding member of the National Olympic
Committee of Sri Lanka as the representative for TT whenever he was
holding office with the TTASL.
Under his Presidency the game of Table Tennis spread all over the
Island specially in Kurunegala, Kegalle, Ratnapura, Galle and Matara
where the game was not competitively played before. He also Promoted
Table Tennis in the districts of Trincomalee, Ampara, Batticaloa in 2008
together with Dietmar Doering who is the Chairman of the Asian German
Sports Exchange Program.
All the Office-bearers and Executive Committee were elected
uncontested, which is seen as a good sign and indicates that the
election of office-bearers to the helm of the sport was made unanimously
by the affiliated clubs and associations and have received its support
from previous office-bearers. |
