Illicit liquor:
Woman gets fine and RI
Kapila Somaratna Panadura group corr.
A woman who pleaded guilty to possessing 14 drams of illicit liquor
was fined Rs. 100,000 and in default 18 months rigorous imprisonment by
Panadura Magistrate Thusara Rajasinghe.
Neththikumarage Malanee Dharmasena was also sentenced to 12 months
rigorous imprisonment after she admitted to 17 previous convictions of
selling and possessing illicit liquor.
Foreign liquor shop robbed

Liquor and cash amounting to over Rs. 1.4 million has been robbed
from a foreign liquor shop at Moragahahena, Horana by an unidentified
armed gang who had broken open the shop on Sunday.
Panadura District Crime Investigation Bureau is investigating.
WTC Post Office closure withdrawn
The Postal Department was considering to close down the post office
located at the World Trade Centre (WTC) after shifting the Posts and
Telecommunications Ministry from WTC to its new building at No. 310, D.R.
Wijewardena Mawatha. However due to the protests and concern shown by
various institutions, banks and other establishments functioning in the
WTC, the Postal Department has decided to revoke the earlier decision
and to continue the functioning of this post office in the same place.
Prachina Pandita degree final exam
The final examination of the Prachina Bashopakara Samagama’s Prachina
Pandita general degree 2008 (2009) will be held on April 4, 5, 10, 11,
17, 18, 19, 20 and May 2, 3, 16, 17 at several places in the island.
Admission cards for the prospective candidates have already been
dispatched by post.
Those who have not received them may contact the Foreign Exam Branch
of the Examination Department, Commissioner General of Examinations,
Anura Edirisinghe said in a press release.
Avurudu Pola
The Avurudu bargain pola by the Sri Lanka Housewives’ Association
will be held on Saturday, April 4 at the Public Library Auditorium from
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entrance free.
New Year festival
A New Year festival organised by the Isipathanarama pre-school will
be held at the Isipathanaramaya, Thimbirigasyaya on April 4 at 9 a.m.
under the patronage of Isipathanaramadhipathi Ven. Kihimbiye Vijitha
Nayake Thera.
Lecture on Indian election
B. Muralidhar Reddy, Special Correspondent for The Hindu will deliver
a lecture on the “Forthcoming Indian Election-A Perspective” at ICES, 2,
Kensey Terrace, Colombo 8 on Tuesday, April 7 at 5.30 p.m. Dr. S.I.
Keethaponcalan, Senior Lecturer, Department of Political Science,
University of Colombo will preside.
Badur Mowlood
The recital of Badur Mowlood will be conducted by Al Haj Moulavi M.T.
Hilurhdeen (Falahi) and Al Haj Moulavi A.B.M. Mubarak (Falahi) from
April 2 after Magrib prayers and will continue until Isha prayers at the
Nawala Jummah Mosque.
Prayers, lectures
The program will commence on Sunday, April 5 with Rathibathul
Jalaliya by Moulavi A.B.M. Mubarak (Falahi) and Y.M. Rafi. A religious
lecture will also be conducted by Moulavi Al Haj M.T. Hilurhdeen (Falahi)
after Isha prayers at the Nawala Jumma Mosque.
Special meeting
The special meeting of Past Pupil’s Association of Maharagama Central
College (Practising College) will be held on April 5 at the College
Hall, commencing at 3.30 p.m.
Concert
The annual concert of the Montessori House of Children, the
Pre-School attached to the Colombo South International College will be
held at the BMICH on April 4 at 5.30 p.m.
