The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has deployed extra buses to
overcome the inconvenience of thousands of long distance commuters due
to the protest campaign launched by the certain inter provincial private
bus operators demanding the withdrawal of the program to maintain
discipline among drivers and conductors introduced by the National
Transport Commission (NTC).
NTC Director General M.A. Jeffry told the Daily News that the NTC has
formulated a new program to improve discipline among bus operators to
ensure the protection, comfort and confidence of the commuters.
But certain inter-provincial private bus operators are engaged in a
protest campaign by demanding the suspension of this program implemented
since March 30.
He said a large number of commuters were put to great inconvenience
at bus terminals while a significant drop in attendance was recorded at
Government institutions and schools. However, the impact of the strike
was somewhat diminished owing to the Government's move to deploy more
SLTB buses to prevent a complete breakdown in the public transport.
Certain bus operators whom disciplinary action has been taken on the
violation of rules and regulations imposed for inter provincial buses by
the NTC have led the protest.
He said a number of bus operators have refrained from running their
buses due to threats from protesters.
The Police have been informed regarding this situation and a special
program is being implemented by the Police to provide sufficient
security for buses operating despite the protest.
Meanwhile, security at bus halts and stands have also been
strengthened.
The rules and regulations imposed by the NTC have been violated by
these protesters and we are compelled to inform the Supreme Courts about
the violators.
He urged bus owners not to giving into the protesters. "They can
lodge their complaints with the Police regarding those who violate the
rules and regulations imposed by the NTC.
