Acting Navy spokesman Commander Mahesh Karunaratne said a fierce sea
battle raged in the seas off Mullaitivu from 12.00 midnight and lasted
until 4.00am yesterday. “The Naval patrol deployed in Silawathai and
Chundikulam initially observed three LTTE boats deployed from
Puthumathalan coming towards Chalai.
When sailors approached the LTTE boats, the Naval patrol had come
under LTTE fire,” he added.
The Navy deploying the Small Boat Squadron and the Rapid Action Boat
Squadron launched a barrage of fire and destroyed all three Sea Tiger
boats.
“Following the incident, another LTTE boat was spotted in the same
area and the Naval patrol RABS destroyed the Tiger boat”, Commander
Karunaratne told the Daily News.
LTTE communication intercepts revealed that a Sea Tiger leader
‘Maran’ and several senior Sea Tigers were killed. “At least 26 Sea
Tigers were killed and four LTTE boats completely destroyed in the sea
battle,” he added. |
