Mahapola bursary for 32,000
Over 32,000 undergraduates received Mahapola scholarships in the past
three years. Rs. 2,550 million has been spent from Mahapola Funds for
this purpose. Around 160,000 students have received Mahapola
scholarships from 1981 to 2008.
The criteria of selection for scholarships was based on the highest
performance at the GCE Advanced Level Examination with 10 percent on
merit and 90 per cent on income basis.
The present allocation of Rs. 2,500 has been possible by investment
of the scholarship fund amounting to Rs. 5.5 billion with annual
interest of dividends as a single partner of investment in the National
Lotteries.
The SLIIT, Malabe was floated by Mahapola Funds to enhance job
opportunities.
Around 9,005 university students registered with the institute in
2008.
