SC terminates CMC agreement

The Supreme Court yesterday terminated an agreement between the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) and two companies to manage solid waste in Cyril C. Perera Mawatha in Colombo 13.

It was revealed that the two companies had failed to set a compost manufacturing plant in breach of the agreement. The court issued notice on all the respondents. The Bench comprised Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva PC with Justice P.A. Rathnayake PC and Justice S.I. Imam.

Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva, PC observed that the solid garbage could be economically used to generate power instead of compost and directed the CMC to explore the possibility of embarking on such a venture.

The petitioners stated that the garbage deposit site at the Cyril C. Perera Mawatha, Colombo 13 was not properly managed and that area had been polluted.
