Annites in stunning win over Devans

St. Anne’s College Kurunegala won their 17th annual limited over cricket encounter against Maliyadeva College by 11 runs on the parabola system at the Welagedera Stadium, Kurunegala yesterday.

The 17th encounter was expected to be a good one for the Devans when considering the strength of their team which included three Sri Lanka under-19 caps, Wimanga Perera, Dasun Madumal and Gayan Maneeshan, but it turned out to be a disaster in the evening at the Welagedera Stadium yesterday.

Annites were in trouble losing eight of their wickets for 108 but J. Wijesinghe (29) and A. Fernando (20 n.o.) played courageous innings to get them to a decent total.

Annites scored 153 for nine wickets in the match which was restricted to 49 overs due to heavy rain on Saturday.

N. N. Alwis did most of the damage for the Annites in the first half of the match, taking four for 26.

At one stage it looked like a very low score to compete against the mighty Devans but the Annites skipper Shanaka Shanida and N. Ratnayake turned the game in their favour.

Shaninda ended up with 3 for 25 and Ratnayake, 3 for 37 wrecking the Maliyadeva innings.

Annites `completely took control of the game before the last pair came into bat for the Devans.

Devans skipper Dasun Madumal played a captain’s innings to take his team to a comfortable position but got out at 32 when he was caught by Piyasiri off the bowling of Wijesinghe.

He was the only Devan batsman to make an impressive score as all the others failed to cope with the Annites bowling attack.

At last with only 98 on the Devans scoreboard, the game was stopped due to the invasion of the ground by spectators and bad light which saw the Annites winning by 11 runs on the Parabola system.
