Awarded Zonta Sportswoman

Samarakoon, 17, a student of Gateway College, Kandy, a talented in many
fields brought honour to her school and hometown when she was awarded
the Zonta ‘Woman of Achievement Award for Sports’ at a ceremony held at
Cinnamon Grand in Colombo by Zonta Club 1 of Colombo recently.
She represented Sri Lanka at the Open National level swimming from
the age of 11 group and won four silver medals and nine bronze medals at
the South Asian Games held in 2004, 2006 and 2007. She holds four
national records.
She became the National Swimming Champion for two consecutive years
in 2007 and 2008.
She was also adjudged the ‘Up and coming Sports Woman’ at the Sri
Lanka Schools Awards ceremony in 2008. She captained the Sri Lanka
Schools swimming team for the Asian Schools Swimming. Championship in
Malaysia in 2008.
She has also obtained 11 A’s at the IGSCE Examination in 2008. She is
the youngest graduate of the British Computer Society. She has authored
a book on poetry at the age of 13. She is a versatile dancer and has won
first places at all island contests.
She is also a President Guide with a large haul of badges.
Appointment
Plantation Industries Minister D. M. Jayaratne has appointed Keerthi
Sri Weerasinghe as Chairman of the Coconut Development Authority.
Weerasinghe is a product of Tissa Central College Ampara. He has
served as Executive Director and Managing Director of Elkaduwa
Plantations and Working Director of the Tea Research Institute.
He also serves as the Executive officer and MD of the Devco Show
Institute which was restructured under the direction of President
Rajapaksa.
