Schools sports stars to be honoured

Four hundred and eighty two boys and girls from 155 schools will receive colours in the Schools Sports Colours Award Ceremony which will be held on 17th March at BMICH, Colombo 7.

The Schools Colours Award ceremony is organised by Sri Lanka Schools Sports Council, Ministry of Education and Nestle Lanka (Ltd) for the 16th consecutive year.

Guest of honour on this occasion will be the Minister of Higher Education Prof. Vishwa Warnapala and a special invitee will be the Senior Vice President (Commercial) of Nestle Lanka (Ltd) Mohamed Hamsa.

The Highest number of sportsmen and sportswomen who will receive schools colours are from Western Province (248 from 70 schools) Central Province in second place with 114 sportsmen and sportswoman from 30 schools. Others are North Western (37), Southern (30), Sabaragamuwa (24). North Central (20), Uva (7), Eastern one, and Northern Province one coloursman.

Highest number of coloursmen and women who will receive schools colours are in Athletics (107) summing is in second place with 42.

The Colours are divided among the sports and games as follows.

Swimming (42) Athletics (107) Badminton (07) Basketball (24) Boxing (20) Carrom (08) Cricket (14) Football (21) chess (12) Gymnastics (14) Hockey (40) Judo (26) Kabaddi (13) Karate (08) Netball (24) Rugby football (24) Soft ball Cricket (06) Sports Aerobics (04) Table Tennis (08) Tennis (12) Throwball (04) Volleyball (24) Weight lifting (09) Wrestling (01).

The up and Coming and the best sportsmen and sportswomen will be selected from following

Boys - Shehan Ambepitiya - Athletics - (Gateway, Rajagiriya), Heshan Bandara Unamboowa - Swimming (Trinity, Kandy), Sachith Pathirana - Cricket (Trinity, Kandy), Buddhika Prabhath Walagampola - Table Tennis (Royal, Colombo), Sukitha Wickramanayaka - Table Tennis - (Dharmaraja, Kandy).

Girls - Miniruwani Samarakoon - Swimming (Gateway, Kandy), Tharindra Weerakoon - Table Tennis (Maliyadeva, Kurunegala), Shanika Sandeepani -

Weight lifting (Devi Balika, Colombo), H. R. Ishara Madhurangi - Table Tennis (Sri Devananda, Ambalangoda), Mineka Karunaratna - Swimming (AIS, Colombo).
