Police arrest ransom collectors

Colombo Central Senior SP Daya Samaraweera yesterday deployed a special police team attached to the Colombo Central Intelligence Bureau to trace the culprits operating in Colombo and collecting ransom from leading businessmen.

Last week, the special police team led by Inspector Jayawardena, attached to the Colombo Central Intelligence Bureau, arrested eight persons including a Police Sergeant and a young woman, while collecting a ransom of Rs. 100,000 with the passport of a businessman from Gampola.

After recording statements of the eight suspects, they were produced before Maligakanda Chief Magistrate C. Dodangoda and remanded till March 13.
