Chandimal's century only bright spot

Ananda skipper Dinesh Chandimal's brilliant unbeaten century was the only bright spot as their 80th annual Battle of the Maroons inter school cricket encounter against their traditional rivals Nalanda College ended in a tame draw at the SSC grounds in Maitland Place yesterday.

The aggressive right hand middle order batsman hammered exactly one hundred not out in their second innings total of 180 for 4 at which stage they declared while leaving their opponents a victory target of 181 runs during the final session.

However bad light prevented the Nalandians from making any progress as they could face only one over before the players returned back to the dressing room. There were of course some confusion among the players at this stage as the Anandians stayed back on the field although the two batsmen decided to pick up the stumps as souvenirs.

Chandimal really made amends for his first innings failure by stroking the ball to all parts of the ground during which time he also crossed the 1500 run mark for the current inter school season.

The Sri Lanka youth cap settled down to play to his true form after a quiet start and accelerated the scoring rate while putting on 72 runs for the fourth wicket together with Sachin Dewage. Ruwinda Sherman joined his captain and the pair added a further 28 runs in even time before Ananda decided to close their second innings with a lead of 180 runs at the tea interval.

Earlier Nalanda College recovered well and managed to reach 140 runs in their first innings which was incidentally the identical score the Anandians made on the opening day.

This was mainly due to the last wicket stand of 34 runs between the overnight batsman Sineth Gunawardena (23) and number eleven Vimukthi Perera who defied the Ananda bowlers for nearly one hour.
