Road construction, repairs in progress

Accelerated road reconstruction and renovation projects are currently under way in the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha division owing to Gama Neguma and Maga Neguma National development programs of the Mahinda Chintana of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, said Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Member Saliya Nanayakkara (UPFA).

He made these comments addressing the monthly meeting of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha held in its auditorium.

Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Indika Sri Mangala Abeykoon presided.

The Chairman said, all renovation activities pertaining to Ranabahu Mawatha and Jayalath Gama Road in the Udupila Grama Niladari division are currently being carried out very successfully by the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha. The estimated cost of these road improvement projects is at Rs. 2.8 million.

Saliya Nanayakkara (UPFA) said the whole-hearted co-operation and fullest support of all members of the Sabha disregarding political hues and petty differences would be indispensable for the speedy completion of all these community development programs.

Chairman Indika Sri Mangala Abeykoon (UPFA) said at the instance of the Chief Minister Southern Province Shan Wijayalal de Silva the Sabha has decided to construct one of the Pradeshiya Sabha roads and name it "Ranaviru Mawatha." A board would be put up there with all names of valourous security forces personnel who laid down their lives for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka.

He also said the matter could be taken up for discussion in a session of an upcoming meeting of this Sabha.

Vice Chairman Jayantha Kodituwakku (UPFA) said reconstruction work on the Welipitiya-Hallala road is going on at snails pace. An adverse environmental pollution has also erupted under this parlous situation.

Chairman Indika Sri Abeykoon (UPFA) replying said Welipitiya-Hallala road came within the purview of the Southern Provincial Council and agreed to refer the matter for immediate attention of the Southern Provincial Road Development Authority.

Daya Pushpakumara Hewa Bettage (UNP) noted the ditch system along the Kamburugamuwa-Garanduwa road has not been properly constructed. Stagnation of water has resulted in a severe environmental pollution.

Susantha Jayalath (UNP) stressed the need of doing all relevant divisional development projects under the supervision of the Sabha. He also urged the members to exercise optimum restraint during the proceedings of the Sabha. Widanagamachchi (UPFA) said priority has to be extended for better quality constructions in all road development activities.

If not, they might badly be damaged soon due to operations of heavy vehicles.

Venerable Walpola Indrarathana Thera (UPFA) also spoke.
