Former Olympic champion dies
British former Olympic boxing champion Chris Finnegan has died aged
64, it was revealed on Monday.
The former bricklayer won middleweight gold at the 1968 Games in
Mexico after beating Aleksey Kiselyov of the Soviet Union in the final.
Finnegan won British, Commonwealth and European titles at
light-heavyweight in his professional career but lost a world
championship bout against America's Bob Foster in London in 1972. The
14-round tussle was named fight of the year by the influential Ring
Magazine. AFP
Sports Meet
Sri Sumangala MMV, Radampala, Urugamuwa will hold its annual sports
meet today at school ground. Dullas Alahapperuma, Minister of Transport
will be the chief guest while Bindu Wickramasinghe is the guest of
honour.
The sports meet is organised by the Old Boys Association of the
school.
Lankans win in Nepal
The Sri Lankan soccerites who played in the opening game of the Prime
Ministers Invitation Soccer Tournament defeated host’s team Nepal Blue
XI three goals to two at Dashrath stadium yesterday. Chathura Guneratne,
skipper Chathura Maduranga and Lahiru Tharaka Silva booted goals for
Lankans victory. |
