Ceremony to bless country

A religious service to invoke blessing on war heroes, the President and the country will be held at Holy Cross Church, Kalutara tomorrow at 9 a.m.

Children of Armed Forces' personnel and police will participate.


Abhidhamma class

The Sumangala Gunanusmarana Sabhava will start an Abhidhamma class at the YMBA Wellawatte in Sinhala from March 12.

The class is conducted by Tripitakacharya H.W. Nandasena and is free of charge. Those wishing to join the class are welcome, the Gunanusmarana Sabha said in a press release. Details could be obtained on 011 2360435.


Award ceremony

The awards ceremony organised under the Nanaguna Waduma - Sisu Diriya program launched on the concept of the President to promote knowledge and values among schoolchildren will be held tomorrow at 4 p.m. at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute Auditorium.


Annual sessions

The 46th annual sessions of the Galle Muslim Cultural Association (GMCA) will be held on March 10 at 9.30 a.m. at the Association Headquarters with GMCA President Dr. Zakir Sally in the Chair.

The public session will commence with the celebration of Prophet Muhammed's birthday celebrations at Southlands College, Fort, Galle Hall at 3.30 p.m.


Women's Day celebrations

Jaffna Hindu Ladies' College (JHLC) Old Girls Association - Colombo will hold the International Women's Day celebration on March 8 at 5 p.m. at Bambalapitiya Saraswathy Hall, 75 Laurens Road, Colombo 4. Former Principal, JHLC Saraswathy Jeyarajah will be the chief guest.

The main event is the felicitation of Sivakamy Ambalavanar, President of JHLC OGA, President of Sri Lanka Association of Testing Laboratories and Chief Analyst of Bamber and Bruce (Pvt.) Ltd. The Annual Magazine Yarl Natham will be released Editor, Vimala Manivasakan.

A talent competition and entertainment program for visually handicapped and disabled women organised by the Junior Chamber International Sri Lanka Colombo (Colombo Jaycees) will be held on Sunday at the Federation of Visually handicapped premises at 94, Church Street, Colombo 2.

This has been organised in connection with this year's International Women's Day which falls on March 8.

The annual English camp of Ruwanwella Maha Vidyalaya, Primary section will be held today at the school.

Former Mounted Police Inspector dies

Retired Police Inspector Sirisena Ovitigama (76) who was attached to the Mounted Police, husband of late Indrani, father of Chief Inspector Hemantha Ovitigama, attached to the Crime Division, Slave Island Police, presently in Haiti, died after a brief illness in Colombo.

His funeral will take place at the Borella General Cemetery on Saturday, March 7 at 5 p.m.

The body is lying at 10/4, Galhena Road, Gangodawila, Nugegoda.

He leaves son Hemantha, daughters Sheyamini, Manjula and Dharshani.



 The Department of Government Information joined hands with Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel to provide news alerts and special SMS based information services such as election results, via SMS to Mobitel subscribers. The exchanging of agreements took place between Government Information Department Director Anusha Palpita, and Sri Lanka Telecom and Mobitel Chairperson Leisha de Silva Chandrasena at the Department of Government Information Auditorium in Polhengoda. A high-powered IMF delegation met Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister and Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Sarath Amunugama at his ministry recently. Discussions centered on identifying the adverse effects of the worldwide recession and the remedial measures to be taken to offset its impact on Sri Lanka. Minister Amunugama pointed out that massive foreign aid have been received for development priorities including assistance provided by the World Bank for the Northern and Eastern rehabilitation. Programmes to improve agriculture, energy, fisheries, tourism etc. have also been implemented. The IMF delegation included Brian Edkin, Ebrimapal, Magnus Sakshaguard, Etory Quintrasi and Executive Director, K. G. G. D. Dheerasinghe. Several Finance Ministry officials, including Finance Secretary Sumith Abeysinghe also participated.
