Bold reply by Isipathana

Isipathana and Thurstan were on even keel at the end of the first day of their 46th annual cricket encounter played at the Sinhalese Sports Club grounds yesterday.

In reply to Thurstan’s 249 all out ,Isipathana were 149 for 4 at the end of the days play.

Thurstan batting first were given a electrifying start by their openers skipper Indika Massalage 56 off 35 deliveries with nine fours and two sixes and the identical score (56) by Shehan Kamaleen who had ten fours facing 82 balls in a first wicket stand of 78 off 53 balls.

With the pair threatening to cut loose paceman Samaratunga struck twice to send Massalage and Kamaleen in rapid succession. Thurstan lost wickets at regular intervals with Dinusha Fernando striking a good length to unsettle the middle order. Dinusha Fernando had the excellent figures of 6 for 67 in his 20 overs.

Thurstan were helped by an useful ninth wicket stand of 58 by Chamalka Gamage ( 60) with eight fours facing 123 deliveries and Ishan Perera who was run out for 42 after facing 52 balls and reaching the boundary on four occasions and six.

Isipathana based on a fine 93 run partnership for the second wicket between Pranama Sri Vimukthi ( 71 n.o) with eight fours and Thivanka Ranasinghe(16) in their turn were 149 for 4 .

The match will be continued today at 9.30 am
