SAARC Education Ministers' meeting
The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by the Minister of
Higher Education Vishwa Warnapala to hold the SAARC Education/Higher
Education Ministers' meeting on March 26 and 27 at Hotel Hilton, Colombo
and to obtain Rs. 20 million from the General Treasury to meet the
expenditure involved.
Extend relief package to plantations
The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by the Minister of
Public Estate Management and Development, Milroy S. Fernando to extend
the relief package given to the RPCs and private tea factory owners on
the same condition to SLSPC, JEDB and EPL providing a subsidized loan to
meet one month's Working Capital requirements based on their respective
Turn Over in the Month of October 2008 from Commercial Banks with 100%
Treasury Guarantees.
* Extend CESS benefits given to RPCs through Sri Lanka Tea Board
providing grants to SLSPC, JEDB and EPL to modernize their Tea Factories
and replanting their old seed tea plantations with VP Tea etc.
* Receive fertilizer to three PPCs at a subsidized prize during the
year 2009.
* Explore the possibility of extending benefits and services of the
ADB sponsored plantation development project given to Regional
plantation private companies to five public plantation companies.
Reopening Lankan mission in Iraq
The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by the Minister of
Foreign Affairs Rohitha Bogollagama to reopen the Sri Lankan Embassy in
Baghdad, Iraq at Charge de' Affaires level.
Restructuring Sri Lanka Postal Department
The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by the Minister of
Posts and Telecommunications Mahinda Wijesekara to restructure Sri Lanka
Postal Department. Proposed amendments stipulated in the 1996 Sub Post
Masters' Constitution.
The Cabinet also approved to absorb casual employees into existing
vacancies.
