When nominations concluded at 12.00 noon yesterday, 2,378 candidates
had joined the fray from at least 17 political parties and 23
independent groups, in contention for a total of 102 seats.
In addition, two bonus seats are on offer to the winners of the
Western province, which consists of three districts, namely Colombo,
Gampaha and Kalutara. However the nomination papers of seven political
parties and six independent groups have been rejected, due to
irregularities.
In Colombo, the nominations of two political parties and three
independent groups have been rejected, with three parties and two
independent groups suffered the same fate in Gampaha. In Kalutara too
the nominations submitted by two parties and one independent group have
been rejected.
Main political parties such as the UPFA, UNP and the JVP have
submitted nominations for all three districts.
