Baghdad mission to open soon
Chaminda PERERA
The Government will soon re-establish the Sri Lanka mission in
Baghdad which was closed in 2003 following the American invasion of
Iraq.
The Cabinet of Ministers approved a memorandum submitted by Foreign
Minister Rohitha Bogollagama for the recommencement of diplomatic ties
between Iraq and Sri Lanka. The United Left Front Government led by
former Premier Sirimavo Bandaranaike first established a mission in Iraq
in 1962.
The Cabinet also gave a nod for the setting up of a Sri Lankan
mission in Tripoli.
The Government expects that diplomatic ties between Libya and Sri
lanka would benefit both countries in many ways.
