WPC election :

UPFA hands in nominations

UPFA General Secretary and Education Minister Susil Premajayantha yesterday handed over the nominations of candidates contesting the upcoming Western Provincial election under the UPFA ticket for the Kalutara, Gampaha and Colombo returning officers.

Two candidates from the National Freedom Alliance have been accommodated on the UPFA list from each district. Former Cricket Board Chief Thilanga Sumathipala, former Provincial Councillors Nawzer Fowzie, Duminda Silva, Gamini Thilakasiri and Ashoka Lankathilake are among the 46 candidates contesting the Provincial Council election from the Colombo district while former Provincial Councillor Prasanna Ranatunga tops the Gampaha district nomination list.

Former NSB Chairman Upali Gunaratne, and former Provincial Councillors Meril Perera, Sunil Wijeratne are in the UPFA nomination list for Gampaha. Former Western Province Chief Minister Reginald Cooray tops the UPFA Kalutara District list while SLFP Horana Chief Organiser Vidura Wickramanayaka, and Bandaragama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Lalith Ellawala are in the nomination list.

Four Political parties including the UPFA and seven independent groups forwarded nominations for the forthcoming Provincial election to the Colombo district returning officer by yesterday, More than eight independent groups have made deposits by yesterday.

The time granted for the accepting of deposits from independent groups ended yesterday noon.

Five political parties and three independent groups yesterday handed over nominations to the Gampaha returning officer while six political parties including the Sinhalaye Maha Sammatha Boomiputra Pakshaya, Sri Lanka Progressive Front have forwarded their nomination list to the Kalutara returning officer. Over four independent groups made deposits yesterday morning.
